So what's the dream? And why?
Gaia started with a simple frustration — and a lot of conversations.
There are three of us behind Gaia: Matt, Ellen and Becca. By day, we all work in corporate London. Matt and Ellen advise on large-scale infrastructure projects (yes, including things like Sizewell C), while Becca works in sustainability consultancy, helping major global companies navigate their environmental impact.
From the inside, we’ve seen how sustainability is often treated as a tick-box exercise. Not because people don’t care, but because the benefits are usually too small, too slow, or too unclear to justify the effort. The result? Sustainability becomes expensive, time-consuming, and isolating — with little more than a pat on the back in return.
At the same time, we’ve always loved travelling and staying in interesting places. But whenever we tried to find genuinely eco-friendly accommodation, the options felt limited. Sustainable often meant very rural, very niche, or — lovely as they are — another yurt. Comfortable, well-run, sustainable stays were surprisingly hard to come by.
That’s when the penny dropped.
Hosts are facing the same problem as big corporations — being sustainable is hard, costly, and rarely rewarding. Guests want to make better choices, but struggle to find places that make it easy. And everyone is doing it alone.
So we decided to change that.
why did we start Gaia?
Gaia exists to make sustainability accessible, practical, rewarding — and genuinely enjoyable. We’re building a management service, platform, and community where hosts are supported to run better, more sustainable properties, and where those efforts are actually recognised and rewarded. Not just with good intentions, but with real savings, better performance, and stronger demand.
Most importantly, we want this to be a journey — not a finished product. Gaia is new, evolving, and shaped by the people who join it. Hosts, guests, partners — all learning, improving, and moving forward together.
Sustainability shouldn’t feel lonely. It should feel exciting.
